Glasgow Women's Institute Book 4 A Peek Into the Past This week‘s Peek Into the Past was submitted by Neil Stewart. Stewart also provided the ioilowlng text. The above photo depicts the Independent Order of Good Templars. The main purpose at this society was the promotion of the abstinence from alcoholic beverages. A lodge was started at New Glasgow In the 1810s. A lot was purchased from David Mackle and a temple was erected along the seventh conses- slon llne opposite the school at Lundy's Corner. Although It Is not know Just when the lodge disbanded most of them seem to have disappeared after World War I. The Glasgow building was removed when the Kings Highway 17 was built through McNab Township In the 1920s. Thls photo Is one In a collection that belonged to Stewart‘s maternal grandmother Mary H. Cherry. Stewart does not have the names of those In the photo but suspects that local family names Carswell, Hamilton, Young and Murphy are represented In the photo.
