NaeMillan, McMillan, and M'Millan. p.m. , - It is difficult to find a rule to decide which is which. As the spoken word comes before the written, it is quite possible the spelling follows the pronounciation. The original spoken word being Gaelic, it follows that hAC might be considered nearer that pronounciation. This spelling became abbreviated to M' or NC by those who emphasized the MILLAN. Apparently different members of the clan spelled the name using these three spellings, and there seems to be no distinction as to geographical location, or even to colloquial usage. Whether it be Edinburgh, or Glasgow, or the country villages, or Canadian cities or towns, or the U.S.A. or Australia or the fringes of Asia or Africa the name is spelled commonlv MAC, but also MC or M'.
