// we? HISTORY OF THE MAR SCHOOL School Section #2 Albemarle Township was incorporated in the Year 1870. In that same year a log school house was erected on the one half acre at the north-east corner of Lot 21 Con 2 BER. Miss Greer (later Mrs.Cross) was the first teacher. Another early teacher was William MacDonald. later editor of the Chesley Enterprise. A second school. a frame structure, replaced the log school on the same site. William wainson Contracted to build the school for $1,875 with an additional charge of $35 for the metallic ceiling. Debentures were ;ssnen to Henry Krug and the last payment of $88 came due in the fall of 1937. The old school property was sold to Edward Galbraith for $131 on April 1, 1908. Furniture and equipment from the second school was moved across the road to the new bu1lding. however some new biackboards were purchased as well as a large pendulum clock. The school had a'furnace for heating and a box stove for hot lunches. In the first year a flag pole was erected. At this time Archie Crane was chairman of the school board and Andzew Wei: was secretary. The school board conSisted of three latepayers elected at the annual school board meeting. The board met monthly, usually in the school house. to conduct its * ainess. The teacher was inspected annually. and oftane: it rhe need arose. by the County school inspector, who made h1~ yeport to the province and to the local board. Pchool Section #2 covered an area ofthirteen and one half square miles. In 1912 it was enlarged to include the flftEEMlh lw twentyâ€"fifth concession EER. Some of the earliest families in attendance were the Whites and Weirs who were Scottish. the Cranes and Givens who were Irish. and the Krugs who were of ï¬erman descent. Miss McPherson was the first teacher in the new cement block school; she received $425 per annum for the calendar year. Teachers were not hired for the school year until considerably later. 1
