t, \‘J l Lu‘ -. COMMUNITY SUPPORT NEEDED Submitted Our KW.I.. now the oldest active Women’s Institute in the world (9.00.000 members world wide) is celebrating its 110th anniversary. September 11th. 2007. with a gala luncheon at the new Cobble Beach Clubhouselnn at 11:30AM. A comâ€" memorative. one-of-aâ€"kind cairn is to be constructed in honour of our founder Mrs. Clara Gardner, the pioâ€" neer members and all members who have passed on. A flowering crab apple tree will be planted in loving memory of these members. Relatives and friends are invited to participate in the planting. Her Eitcellency. The Right Honourable Governor General of Canada, Michaelle Jean, has been invited to ofï¬ciate at the cairn dedication. The cairn is to be prominently placed on a one acre piece of land at the corner of Grey Road 1 and Mile 0 of Island View Drive, the former site of the Anglican Church at the turn of the century. Our Township of Georgian Bluffs Council is kindly developing this site as a ' Lookout/Parkette and is naming it The Kemble Women’s Institute ‘ Lookout. This Lookout. with its . Cheyne won the corn beautiful view looking down on the green farm ï¬elds, then on to Ed and Teddy Sutherland's old farm house and red barn, then out to the panoramic View of Georgian Bay and the Escarpment on the far shore, will be the only roadside vehicular lookout on the entire West Bayshore. Local artisan/sculptor Marnie petition for the cairn design. Her design includes a e.â€"_ large rectangular cube of local marble representing a table. On this table are bronze pieces. three cups and saucers, a tea pot, cream and sugar, :1 plate of cookies and an open book represenb ing the Tweesmuir Books with the Mary Stewart Collect all secured to the stone. Beside the table is a bronze chair secured to the concrete base slab. The side of the table will be used as the mounting surface for the commemorative bronze plaque. The founding members of the K,W.I will have their names engraved on the end of the table (costs hopefully born by the family members). A table set for socializing and busiâ€" ness is what came to Mamie’s mind when she thought of our early farm women coming together. Things have not changed much even today. Mamie said, “These meetings were very positive for their conununity as the many records show. Things that our schools, hospitals and libraries etc. take for granted now were extrava- gances in the early part of this century but these women worked hard and creatively to improve these institu7 tions, their communities and their families." The viewer of the cairn will see a table set. ready for a meeting. The familiar pieces on the table and the chair waiting for someone to sit down will draw the viewer in. They will want to know more1 read the plaque and touch the teapot. Marnie says, “Their modest beginnings have endured and enriched our lives for 110 years." The cairn will tell a story! People will want to sit on the chair and let their imaginations take hold of what it must have been like for the country women involved with the KWJ. sit- ting around the kitchen table. Visitors will want to sit on the chair and have their pictuIe taken with the outstandâ€" ing view of the bay in the background. Thecairn willbeagemandsowill the Lookout once it is properly landâ€" scaped. The Lookout and cairn will become a landmark and point of interâ€" est We hope once the story about the table and chair spreads. the cairn will become a Mecca for visiting Women‘s institute members from across Canada and the world. We have one problem! We do not have enough money to complete the project. The Ontario Trillium Foundation has granted us $15.00C . towards the cost of the cairn and the bronze plaque but it is not enough It cover all the costs of same " 'Kemble W.I. oldest active W]. in World As well ‘ we want to see two bencth (made from stone matching the calm: placed to either side of the cairn. a heavy duty picnic table similar to the one Lil ‘ the Big Bay dock. flower boxes. :1 . sided kiosk with one side show- | mg the new Grey/Bruce map - one side listing all the outdoor amenities we are blessed with in Georgian Bluffs - one side a smorgasbord of ‘ bnef promotional material for Kernblv: & Area organizadonslinstitutjons and community events. three flag poles - a mi] one for the Canadian flag a the _ vehicular round-about-two shorter ones framing the cairn carrying the Georgian Bluff's and women‘s Institute‘s flags.
