@ Sharing Our Heritage Calabogie The lumbering industry on the Madawaska River was booming in the 1800‘s and it was the damming ofthis river that Calabogie Lake was formed. The village of Calabogie sprang to life and began shipping lumber to places stlch as Toronto and Quebec for sale on the international market, Inth 1880’s the Cam/ell, Thistle 8: McKay sawmill employed an impressive 60 men. As a great demand for transportation grew, the Kingston 8:. l’cmgroke (K&P) Railway Line was built. This provided a rock causeway and connected Barryvalc across Grassy Bay to the village, With the new railway line the graphite mines opened up a Few miles from the Village of Black Donald. It was one ofthe richest deposits ofthe mineral in the world. With the 1965 construction ofMounlain Chute (lam the area was flooded and now lies beneath the beautiful Centennial Lake. A wonderful tourist and cottage g area is enjoyed all year round. Vsâ€; I I .. The village ofCalabogie grew as the settlers came. 3% ‘ Miners, lumberjacks and shopkeepers were soon joined by farmers as many families moved in and around the village. Soon churches and schools took their places in this small community.
