LV/2_ 9‘ VESSIE'S FARM HISTORY Lot 71, 70, 72 Con.3 William Metcalfe was born on the Metcalfe homestead in Nichol Township on September 3. 1835. Shortly after his marriage to Mary L. Thring. of Guelph Township, he purchased a farm on the South Line Brant Township. Bruce County, not far from the Town of Hanover in 1867. He chose this property in order to have sufficient water for the livestock, as a branch of the Saugeen River touched both the front and the rear of the farm. The railway was surveyed through the farm at a later date and passed over the river by means of a steel bridge. When the bridge was replaced by a shorter span and the farmers upstream drained their properties into the river by open ditches, it quite often created extensive flooding in the spring time. The flood level became extremely high in 1912 and again in 1929, when the river overflowed its banks and covered the surrounding country side. On these oo- casions it was necessary to move the livestock to the up- per floor of the barn to save it from drowning and aoboat was used to travel from the house to the barn.
