Gertrude became ill with pneumonia and died April 4. 1896. Her son. Henry, married Abigail Lambertus November 22. 1896: and Valentine. his father lived with his son until his death October 17, 1909. The burial being in the Carlsruhe cemetery. After they had moved to the South Line, Valentine still drove a beer wagon and during the winter of ? he met with a very Serious accident when the wagon or sled upset and he was pinned under it crushing his right temple. He was a Lutherian and called for his minister but because of the bad weather conditions would not come from Hanover so they called Father Holm from Carlsruhe who came and administered the last rights. This resulted in Valentine turning to the Catholic faith until his death. Gertrude was always a Catholic. This also resulted in his son Henry becoming a Catholic when he married. He had always gone to church with his mother but had never turned until after her death and his marriage. (She, Gertrude, made this guilt by hand in the pattern known as the bears' foot. It has been handed down to her son Henry, to his dauhter Gerturde, my grandmother, and on to her great great granddaughter Cathy (Eross) Weber and is still in fair condition.) N
