POND MILLS CEMETERY This cemetery was set aside by the early settlers of Westminster Township as I. burial ground. At that time the school was on the property. but about 1860, it was built on a site further around the Pond. I The first burial was that of Mrs. Elliot Grieve on May 12, 1825. Mr. Grieve made a rude coffin from slabs split out of wood. There was neither minister nor undertaker to perform the last rites. A public meeting was held at Pond Mills School on June 9. 1854, with Thomas Baty as Chairman and Robert Fleming as Secretary. At that meeting. James Thomson. Robert Baty and Robert Fleming were named as trustees to superintend the burying ground and have it laid out in suitable plots. Those who took plots were to pay $1. 00. Later thse plots cost $6. 00. In 1919, the cost was raised to $10. 00 for five burials. By 1957, the cost of a fiveâ€"grave plot was $100. 00. and half a plot for three graves cost $60. 00. Additional ground was purchased from Adam Baty immediately north of the original section. In 194-1, Dr. Hugh Stevenson donated the land across the road with stone gateposts and picket fenc 6 installed. Qi/i
