fitrahane Strabane United Church saw history come alive on Feb. 19, 1997 as Women's Institute members from Strabane, Mountsberg and Westover paraded in dresses in the styles that were worn in the 18005, lent to us from Westfield Heritage Village History books and articles were on display. Lunch was prepared by members consisting of sandwiches, tea biscuits with jam and a beautiful] decorated centennial cake, tea and coffee. In June many of our members attended Centennial Conference in Hamilton. During the early summer our branch planted a centennial W.I. rose bush in the local park In September we had Carol Dailey speak at our regular meeting. She is the granddaughter of Janet Lee. She spoke about her memories of her grandmother and the Erland Lee home. 4 Strabane, Westover and Mountsberg W.I. meeting, Feb. 19, 1997 Mrtttmnrth South Etattirt Wentworth South District and the new banner showing their 7 branches: Carluke, Binbrook, Maggie Johnson, Patricia, Stoney Creek, Vinemount, Woodbum b Einbrnnk The Binbrook Women's Institute created a signature quilt with names ranging from founding members to the present time. Mayor Anne Bain of Stoney Creek presented certificates to WI. Tweedsmuir Curators. On February 19, 1997 Binbrook hosted the South Wentworth District Centennial Celebration. A banner was created as our part of the celebrations. . Because Binbrook is so close to the Lee Museum Home, some of our members acted as hostesses during the Centennial Celebrations. They enjoyed meeting guests from around the world On June 21, 18 members of Binbrook W.I.attended the celebrations in Hamilton. The signature quilt from Binbrook V (flarlnke Mr. Erland Lee of Stoney Creek brought the idea of a Women's Institute to Carluke and Miss Jessie Stewart was one of the most enthusiastic supporters of the idea She helped arrange for the inaugural meeting there on July 4, 1901, at which time Mrs. John Butter was elected President. Carluke Branch set up displays on several occasions during this special year of celebration We celebrated 100 Years of WI. with Wentworth South District in Binbrookon Feb. 19, 1997. We had displays at the Fieldcote Memorial Park & Museum in conjunction with Copetown and Patricia branches. Betty Stewart and Edna Ward, members of Carluke branch have spent many hours at events such as Maple Syrup Day, Garden Parties, Local Artist Show, Harvest Luncheons, Victorian Christmas Fair. They also hosted bus trips and various volunteer jobs. We participated in 3 parades with our float. At the Ancaster Historical Society Meeting, Betty Stewart was guest speaker and to end the busy year we sponsored the local Community Centre New Year's Eve party. fituneg (flreek (Jiharter For the 100th anniversary of W.I., Stoney Creek Charter W.I., along with Vinemount W.I. sponsored a historical story contest about happenings in the Stoney Creek area. This idea was inspired and co-ordinated by June Williams, President of Stoney Creek Charter W.I. On Feb. 16 at the annual Heritage Day celebrations held at Stoney Creek City Hall, the contest prizes were given out. A special prize of $25.00 was given to a pupil who wrote about the Women's Institute. The pupils were from the Stoney Creek area schools and in grades 6,7 and 8. After the ceremonies a beautifully decorated 100th anniversary cake was served in the Atrium of City Hall On Feb. 19, 1997 our members met with Binbrook, Carluke , Maggie Johnson, Vinemount and Woodhouse branches in Binbrook United Church Hall for lunch followed by a program Some of our Stoney Creek Charter W.I. members took part in the "Memories of previous years". We donated a Women's Institute rose bush to Erland Lee Home, for the rose bed on the grounds. We also donated a copy of "For Home & Country" to Stoney Creek Library. On June 16th & 17th Mary Dean, a member and her husband Gordon Dean depicted Janet and Erland Lee at the garden parties at the Erland Lee Home, greeting the many Canadian and International visitors as they arrived Several of our members attended the International dinner on June 21 at the Annories in Hamilton and the program later that evening at Hamilton Place.
