Events that district members took part in were : - attended the Centennial Celebrations in Hamilton in June - a picnic was held at the John R. There was a Birthday Cake with 100 candles which won an award in October. The float was also entered in the parade at the Apple Festival, Ruthven, Ontario. - The District held a Christmas Dinner at 3 Greenhouse and restaurant in November. - an Institute booth was set up at the Harrow Fair L-R - Mrs. Banski-Harron, Helen Maelbranke, Pat Grant, Ella Bomford, Essex District award winning float, parade in Kingsville Erika Merimets, Barb Meunier and Audrey Wood of Anderdon-Malden Merton! - £11211th Anderdon-Malden Women's Institute, some twenty member strong gathered at Malden Township Hall on February 19, 1997, to reflect on 100 years of WI. service in the province and the seventy-nine years Malden Institute has been in existence. Anderdon will celebrate seventy-one years in October. Anderdon began monthly meetings in 1926 and ran hundreds of community activities for sixty years. The Malden, chartered (W.I.) in 1918 followed a similar path The two amalgamated in 1990 and is now one of six branches in Essex district. Kent iEaat ifliatrtrt In Thamesville on Feb. 19, 1997, members from Bothwell, Wabash, Beechwood, Elmira, Thamesville and Highgate Women's Institutes gathered at the United Church to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Institute. More than fifty members of the organization filled the Fellowship Hall to enjoy a late luncheon, anniversary cake, displays, sing'ng and a social hour. A brief program of WI. history was followed by a collection for the Headquarter's Fund. Some of those who attended were Maude McDonald, Myra Adkin, Virginia Wright, Mary Bishop, Elsie Howes and Isobelle Lethbridge. Eamhtnn Ninth Etatrirt Egberarher The current members of Aberarder Women's Institute, which was formed in 1910, celebrated the 100"'1 Anniversary of the founding of the Women's Institute in Ontario, on February 11, 1997. Our celebrations consisted of poems, music and readings honoring the past Flowers were presented to the oldest living member, Alex Wilkinson who joined the branch in 1924. The planned program was followed but with some variations. The branch presented Life Memberships to four members: Florence Kernohan, Jane Bryce, Barbara Smith and Bemice Sorrunerville were presented by President Joan King Special events that the branch were involved in during 1997 to celebrate the Centennial were: Two copies of the Home and country History book were donated to the libraries of the local schools, Aberarder Central and Errol Public. Several members attended the unveiling of the new W.I. plaque at the Blue Water Bridge. A display table was on view at a local Heritage Days Event and at the Forest Fair. V Qflttnxeter Some of the ways Uttoxeter members celebrated the 100ih anniversary of the Instiute was a meeting on February 19, 1997. Candles were lit for the past, present and future of WI. A Fashion Show of clothes from different eras, a display of other apparel and jewelry. The hall was decorated as a Tea room, including a milk can, old telephone and lamps, etc. Former members and neighbours were invited Two members were given Life Membership certificates and badges. An Anniversary cake was made by one of our members. It was served with ice-cream during the social hour that followed. In June the branch set up a display of various items, including quilts, etc. in the Institute Hall for Egremont Heritage Week-end. A surprise visitor was F.W.I.O. President, Marg Harris.
