firttrhurnugh Eintrtrt June 7 and 8, 1997 provided opportunity for 250 friends and members of the Women's Institute in Ontario to celebrate their 100th Anniversary at Lang Century Village in Keen. Margaret Killeen, President of the District acted as mistress of ceremonies for the days' events. All 12 branches participated and when they are so far apart, geographically, organizing such a large event was not easy. There was much to see and do both days. On Saturday was a chicken B.B.Q. at noon in McIntyre Park, close to Lang Village. Musical selections by North Shore Public School Band, and a Fashion Show :A Century of Bridal Fashions: from early 1900's to the present day with many of the original owners acting as models. Performing were Scottish Dancers and also special Old Time Music by the Otonabee Old--time fiddlers. Other activities included horse and wagon rides, demonstrations of pioneer activities, a W.I. memorabilia, photographs, excellent displays of quilts, old and new and Tweedsmuir Books to view. On Sunday, we enjoyed an Ecumenical Church service, Brunch at noon, musical entertainment by the Thomas Stewart Secondary School Band. A Kaleidoscope Show of Institute history over 100 years, given in 10 year segments, from an Elvis impersonator to Charleston dancers of the Roaring 20's. At the District welcome Saturday afternoon special guests included Donna Russett of Stirling, Past President of FWIO, Rosella Clancy of Stirling, Provincial Tweedsmuir Curator, and M.P.P. Gary Stewart, who presented a plaque to the District. An anniversary cake was served at the close of the barbecue. As a centennial project the District produced a 3 year calendar showing the work of the Women's Institute. "Life in the Little Red School House" items Keene Women's Institute celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the WI. On Feb. 19, 1997 at Keene United Church, with several former members in attendance. Peterborough District was formed in 1903 when Mrs. Arthur Choate organized the Warsaw branch in her home. Keene W.I. began in 1951 with Fern Doris as president. An interesting program was conducted by the president, Alberta Drummond and guest speaker was Otonabee Township Reeve, David Nelson. A display table was set up of several Institute items, as well as flower decorations of blue and gold as table centerpieces. Refreshments were served with anniversary cake, tea and coffee. fielfirgrt Members of Selwyn W.I. gathered with Smith Township officials on June 29, 1997 to dedicate a rock and plaque in Selwyn Park, as part of their Centennial of the Women's Institute. The plague was from the former church where the branch met for many years. They also attended a time capsule ceremony at the park on the same day. The capsule was placed by Isabelle Blewett, only living charter member and Linda Walker youngest member. It contains papers and documents that proves Selwyn was founded in 1950 and is still active. One of the members made a quilt to raise funds for the District by asking businesses, council and individuals to pay $1.00 to have their names sewn on the quilt. The President embroidered 701 names on the quilt. The members then planned and prepared a Centennial Tea and Flower Show:. This event and quilt project was advertised by flyer, T.V., newspapers and by a display in the local library, entitled "100 Years Past and Present". Two members spoke on the local radio about the WI. The Tea and Flower Show was the highlight of the year, with a large response of flower entries. The Tea was held at the Trent River United Church, where we displayed projects, and Tweedsmuir books. President, Rose Doombos welcomed everyone and asked Life Member, Gracy Pearcy to light the Centennial candle. Deputy-reeve and councillor for Asphodel Township brought greetings to the branch on this special occasion. Antique artifacts were displayed, as well as educational Tweedsmuir books.
