Eifltfifi: Towncrier Russell O-Heam Ermine Louise Women's Institute entertained Lamlash, Centreville and Elmwood branches at their 100th Anniversary Celebration, on Feb. 19, 1997, in Lamlash Hall. The hall was decorated beautifully in blue and white with displays of old kitchen items, quilts and a 1911 wedding dress. The ladies came in period finery. The program followed the planned fomiat. Four life members: Helen Baraithwaite, Phyllis Howie, Grace Patterson and Sylvia Weidendorf lit the candles on the centennial cake. Each branch presented entertainment. A luncheon was served similar to what may have been served 100 years ago. éHHarminn The Marmion Women's Institute followed the program prepared for the 100th Anniversary held on Feb. 19, 1997. Nine members were present and each participated in the various parts of the meeting Answers to the roll call included recollections of leading 4-H clubs, sewing, baking and especially hat making One member read "Adelaide Hoodless - Is the Vision as Bright Today?" A collection was taken for the Headquarters' fimd. Enjoying Anniversary Cake with ice-cream and a cup of tea ended a wonderful day. Zion Zion Women's Institute hosted a 100th Anniversary Party, Feb. 19, 1997. They invited former members and those from disbanded branches, also 3 local librarians. President, Bessie Laurence welcomed everyone. Ethel Peart and Glenny Macdonald, Life Members, assisted Joan Stanford explain the Motto. The 30 ladies present answered the roll call. Members, Jean Anderson, Rita Black, Myrtle Timrnins, Marjorie Vaughan took part in the planned program. Board director, Leona Stubbings brought greetings. Three copies of "For Home and County" were donated to Durham, Markdale and Flesherton Libraries. The librarians were there to accept them. President, Bessie Laurence presented a cheque to a representative for the Durham Food Relief Fund. A collection was taken for the Headquarters' Fund as well. On Wed, Feb. 19, 1997, Ayton W.I. met in the meeting room of the Ayton Fire Hall at noon to celebrate the 100 anniversary of the Women's Institute. Our president gave a warm welcome to former members and guests. Twenty-one ladies were in attendance and just as it was 100 years ago, one gentleman. What a nice surprise! The planned programme was followed Past President Reta Wilson and the executive lit the celebration candles. The meal followed which included food on the proposed menu. All joined in singing the centennial song The roll call "What do you remember fi'om former Institute meetings and of 4-H?" was answered with enthusiasm. Pins were presented to several members. A 25 year pin to Reta Wilson, a 100th Anniversary pin to outstanding member, Eileen Becker and pins to the present executive: President - Violet Fischer, Sec. Treasurer - Velma Weppler and Treasurer - Gertie Schinckel. Everyone was asked to recall memories of the first W.I. meeting they attended which brought out a lot of laughs. Twenty-five ladies joined at the inaugural meeting in 1903 making the branch 94 years old in 1997. By the year 1926 they had grown to 120. An ongoing project over the years has been the upkeep of the park in the village. Other projects have been paying for the first street lights in the village, arranging the Armistice Day Service and making the wreaths and supporting Durham and Mount Forest Hospitals. Anniversary lunch featured snacks popular years ago including cucumber sandwiches, johnny cake and maple syrup.
