There are beautiful scenic opportunities, a number of restored historic buildings and museums, parks, marina and shopping -- all provided with the charm of a typical small town. This city of approximately 45,000 people, situated both below and on top of the Niagara Escarpment, is especially proud of its long and event-filled history. Visitors will be welcomed into restored family homes by costumed guides. And many of these offer infor- mative special events throughout the year, suitable for all family members. The home, built in 1795, is open daily 11 am. to 5 pm. during July and August; restricted hours for the rest of the year. (Phone 662-8458.) During the year, the museum sponsors a number of specual events. July is the occasion of the annual Herb Weekend (July 8 and 9, 1989). Baked goods, sachets, medicinal recipes and cosmetics are all made from herbs grown in the home's own herb garden. Old and new quilts are loaned to the museum for display dur- ing July and August. Every September children enjoy Apple Day (Sept. 17, 1989), when they can participate In apple dunking competitions. Apple dolls, apple pies . and cider made from the museum's old press are available for sale. Battlefield Park is host to the annual re-enactment of the 1813 Battle of Stoney Creek. Visitors thrill to the mock battle, which features costumed American and British troops, bugle charges and cannon fire. Held early every June, the event attracts hundreds of spec- tators to the evening battle and fireworks. Nearby, at the Lion Monument on King Street, east of Battlefield House, is a burial ground for many of the American and British soldiers killed during the 1813 battle. The cairn. erected in 1908, honors the troops olflthese two nations which have since become close a res. The Erland Lee (Museum) Home was once the residence of Erland Lee, co-founder of the first Women's Institute in 1897. Located on Ridge Road west of DeWitt Road (phone 662--2691) if is now owned and maintained by the Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario. The home is open Tuesday to Friday all year except during the month of February, and features fur- nishings from the time of the Lee family. There are pic- nic facilities on the grounds and the home is wheelchair accessible. The museum also sponsors special events. One is the Women's Institute Days in early June (June 6, 7, 8, 1989), when costumed women demonstrate and sell crafts typical of the 19th century.
