Country music capital of Canada Welcome to the country music capital of Canada. The City of Hamilton. Although some Canadian cities might take exception to that claim, it's hard to disagree when the facts are laid bare. Hamilton's CHAM radio, which switched to a country music format only a few years ago, has become the biggest country station in Canada. And the sounds of country music can be heard in many of the city's licensed establishments. And to cap it off, Hamilton's mayor, Bob Morrow. proclaimed Hamilton the country music capital of Canada in a civic ceremony. Gord Eno, CHAM's program director, believes the variety of country music that has emerged over the last decade has helped increase its popularity. - "People want music (in which) they can understand the lyrics," he says. "Country music is music for the heart." Just how popular is CHAM radio? lts powerful signal reaches country listeners wide . and tar. "We get mail from as far away as North Bay to Pennsylvania," he says. "We get letters from people wherever you can hear (the station)." 1989 VIS TORS HELPER AVAILABLE IN, AND COMPLIMENTS OF TRADITIONS COUNTRY, SOUTHERN ONTARIO'S ONLY COUNTRY MUSIC MAGAZINE ' FEATURES LOCAL ENTERTAINMENT/EVENTS PICK UP YOUR COPY ANYWHERE O WRITE FOR FREE ISSUE. . ll '.
