JAMES JAMIESON, FOUNDER OF TWEE_D James Jamieson was born in Berwick-on-Tweed, August 13, 1803. At an early age he came to Canada with his parents and settled in Belleville, where he principally resided until within a few years of his death, when he removed with his family to the Village of Tweed, where he died at the age of 62. Fond of mechanics, and of an enterprising disposition, he built the foundry in Belleville known as the Victoria Foundry, which he subsequently traded for lands and water power in the Township of Hungerford, where he greatly improved the water power and laid out the present village of Tweed, which he named in memory of his birthplace. He also built a grist mill in the Township of Thurlow, where he shortly resided, which mill was subsequently burned. For many Years he acted in the capacity of county surveyor, but steadily refused all IIlunicipal honours tendered to him. Of a quiet and retiring diSPOSitiODa his death was deeply regretted by a large circle of acquaintances, who Valued his sterling qualities as a man and a Christian.
