ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS IN HUNGERFORD - ll Madoc, Elzevir and Tudor Townships, and Marmora, Madoc, Stirling and Deloro Villages. H.J. Cox and K.C. Little, Tweed, and Laurason Gunning and Manley Meeks, Hungerford, represented Tweed-Hungerford on the new Board, with Mr. Cox being elected Chairman. Clifford Cotton was hired as business administrator. In June of 1968 the remaining rural schools in Hungerford were closed. These were U.S.l, Thomasburg, S.S.9, 4th Line, 8.8.15, Bogart, S.S.l6, Parks', 8.8.17 Sulphide and 8.8.18, Marlbank. The following December these schools were sold by public auction. Many of the pupils now attend S.H. Connor School in Tweed, where ten portables were set up for September, 1968, until an addition can be made to the school. Some attend St. Carthagh's Separate School, where portables were also set up. A new library and a gymnasium were built at S.H. Connor School during 1969. County size Boards of Education came into effect January 1, 1969, across the Province of Ontario. These included Hastings County Board of Education, which united all public elementary and high schools in the County under one board, with headquarters at Belleville. Twelve smaller school boards were united under the Hastings County Board of Education, with 24,000 students in 65 elementary schools, 8 secondary schools, and 1 school for exceptional children. In January of 1969 Mr. Eric Runacres was hired as first Director of Education for Hastings County, at a salary of $29,000 per year. Three senior superintendents were hired to serve under him, Mr. D.C. Stirling, Superintendent of Curriculum; Mr. L.R. Reid, Superintendent of Academic Services; Mr. L.A. Kells, Superintendent of Administration, at salaries in the $22-24,000 range. Four area superintendents were also hired, Glenn A. Watson for Area #1, North Hastings; Frank Tate for Area #2, Centre Hastings; J. M. Cousins for Area #3, South-west Hastings, and R.D. Horwood for Area #4, Southâ€"east Hastings. In February of 1969 K.E. Wormald was hired as business administrator. The County was divided into four areas for administration purposes. These are Nerth Hastings, which ineludes the 12 townships at the north end of the County; Centre Hastings, which includes the 9 central townships, including Hungerford; and two areas in the south, with the boundary running through Belleville in a north-south direction. South-west Hastings includes the western part of Belleville, Trenton, Sidney Township and Frankford; Southâ€"east Hastings includes the eastern part of Belleville, Deseronto, Thurlow and Tyendinaga Townships. //
