Perhaps the largest undertaking of the W.I. branches has been their participation in the Ploughing Match held on the Vermilyea and Knight farms in 1961 when all the women from the various organizations in.the East Hastings District served meals in the official tent. The tedious planning and working as one unit in this huge project did much to create a feeling of "togetherness." The Home Economic Branch of the Department of Agriculture sponsors short courses on many subjects and many women take advantage of them to learn various crafts which they would not otherwise know how to do as well as home nursing etc. Homemaker's Clubs have been organized with leaders from the local groups giving instruction to young girls in the rudiments of homemaking, cooking, sewing and gardening. All is not mark, however, and occasionally a bus trip is planned when cares are put aside for a day and the busy housewife enjoys a well-earned change from her usual household duties. Tours have been made of industrial plants but sometimes the jaunt is purely for pleasure - and who deserves such a holiday more than the busy woman down on the farm!
