Women's s Institute Has Rose They've come a long way. Gone are the days when they had to fight to get house- hold science courses‘ estab- lished in Ontario schools. when their energetic founder and leader. Adelaide Hunter Hoodless. conducted a fund- raising campaign to establish MacDonald Institute, now part of the University of Guelph. They're the Federated Wo- men's Institutes of Canada. just as concerned about the quality of life today as they were in 1897 when the organi~ zation was founded. They sub- mitted a briehto the Royal Commission on the Status of Women dealing with marriage and divorle. women in the la- bor force. and taxation as it pertains to married women. They have sent submissions and resolutions to various go- vernment ‘departments deal- ing with health services. the aged. water pollution, agricul- tural retraining programs and educational television. They‘ve set up a Northern Canada Women’s Institute Fund to continue adult educa- tion for women of the north. Another of their ongoing and continuous projects carries the motto ‘Make and keep Ca- nada beautiful'. And it all started when Ade- laide Hunter Hoodle‘ss of , Hamilton, '0nt., recognized a need for education among rural women. The first meet- ing of the F.W.I.C. was held in Stoney Creek. 0nt.. on Fe< bruary 19.1897. The F.W.I.C. is now estab- lished in all 10 provinces. the Yukon and the Northwest Territories.
