VICTORIA CHURCH goontinuedz The Reverend C.G. Williams was the last minister from the Consecon-Carrying Place charge to preach at Victoria. He organized a Ladies' Aid at Victoria. A picture taken in 1913 shows the ladies with blocks of a red and white quilt they had pieced. After quilting it was presented to Mrs. Williams. The Consecon-Carrying Place charge was so large that in 1915 Victoria was transferred to the Bednersville charge. The Reverend R.L. Edwards was the first minister from the Red- nersville charge to serve at Victoria. In 1919 a large wall clock was presented to the church by Mr. and Mrs. Harry Sager in memory of his father, Jacob Sager. In 1924 a kitchen and a cement "stOOp" were added to the church. That autumn a harvest home chicken supper was served at 50¢ per person. Six hundred partook of the delicious food prepared by the church women. Records show that in 1953 over six hundred persons were again fed at a turkey supper. Fowl suppers, bacon and egg suppers, pancake suppers, social evenings, potâ€"luck dinners and quiltings always played an important role in the financing of the church and in keeping community spirit alive. On January lst, 1939 a communion set was presented to the church by Mrs. Alex Fife of Peterborough in memory of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. w.H. Glenn, and by Mr. and Mrs. Lorne Brickman in memory of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bynard Brickman. It was dedicated by the Reverend W.H. Boomhour. In 1953 the church was redecorated by Mr. Maurice Bell of Stirling. At the Rededication Service Mr. Bell conducted his own orchestra, rendering special music for the occasion. The Reverend T.F. Townsend spoke on "The Leprosy of Sin". So many persons attended that chairs were placed in the aisles. On September 29, 1957 the diamond anniversary of Victoria Church was celebrated by special church services at 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. The guest speaker was Mr. Ross Strike, a son of a pastor of the 1890's and the evening speaker at the first Sunday service, Oct. 17, 1897 In 1959 one hundred chairs were purchased from Bethel Chapel at $1.75 each. A new oil furnace was installed in the church in the fall of 1962, replacing a wood-burning one. Percy Catheral was the careâ€"taker of the church for a great many years. From 19n6 to 1960 Harmon Montgomery was care-taker; from 1960 till church was closed by Presbytery, July lst, 1967 Boy Wetherall was careâ€"taker. For many years Charles Adams was Treasurer, followed by his son, Ceburn Adams, then Harmon Montgomery for 25 years from 19u2 till 1967. The trustees in 1967 were Nelson Vanclief, Clifford Calnan, Harmon Montgomery and Morris Pulver° Special services were held in i96u on the 67th anniversary of Victoria Church with the Belleville Salvation Army Band assisting with special music and Colonel A.G° Cameron giving the message. There were many special services down through the years, revival meetings, soo- ials, plays and Christmas concerts held by the light of oil lamps, later under electric lights. The last special service was the 70th anniversary of the church and the 100th anniv- ersary of the Sunday School on June 4th, 1967» The church was filled to capacity at an aft- ernoon service with the Reverend Verne Zufelt as guest speaker.
