A second District Annual was held in Picton in 1909. W.I. PROJECTsflACTIVITIES Over the years the Women's Institutes have undertaken many worthwhile projects and activities. During 2 world wars they spearheaded a tremendous community war effort. l9h3 Report: Knitting...7OO articles; sewing...2000 articles; quilts...22u sent overseas; 70 of these made by Demorestville Branch. $1500 in cash raised and spent on these projects. For the Red Cross.Tons of jam was made at the Brickman factory near Rednersville. Other projects were Cemetery cleanâ€"up and maintenance, establishing libraries, furnishing hospital rooms in Picton Hospital, assisting the True Dlue orphanage, donations of food and clothing to the Canadian Nest; donations against the white Slave Trade; furnishing and maintaining first aid kits in schools; assisting with School Fairs, local museums and the County Fair were some of the contributions down through the years. W.I. has always sponsored and supported ALH Homemaking Clubs. Since 1959 a District Scholarship has been awarded to a deserVing 4H Club member who plans to continue education at some institution of higher learning. Bicentennial Year 1984 was the beginning of District w.l. Craft fairs, which have become annual events. Quilts have been deSigned and quilted , tickets sold and along with door and booth receipts large donations have been made to area hospitals, McFarland Home, the Community Centre, schools and ulUrdrlBS. District w.l. has hosted many Seminars throughout the years ....... to name onl a few - Hug Braiding, Clean Water, Nuclear waste management, Nutrition (Healthy Hating ; Garbage- Not in My Backyard; Cancer Seminars, Landâ€"scaping, Quilting, bread Making, Decor Accents and Money Matters.
