When this school was replaced in 1967 by a new building, the Balsam Hill Women's Institute took it over as a meeting hall. Many members went to school in this building or had family members who attended or even taught in this school. After many years as a meeting hall, the Women's Institute with dwindling membership did not need the hall any more. What should we do with this property now? As a millennium project, community input was sought for the future of this building. No-one wanted it torn down. A grant was obtained and the building refurbished with community help to a one-room classroom again, like it would have been in 1900. Chalkboards, old desks and primers and spelling books were donated. The teachers among our members were eager to see pupils in the seats. The schools of the County were made aware of the opportunity, the grade three curriculum seemed to be most suitable for this type of educational experience. We have been hosting students for over 15 years and every one enjoys the experience. The community is happy to see girls in bonnets and pig tails and boys in caps and suspenders running through the school yard again.
