Coming from Toronto, 1950,T wrote the fCollowing,- In September of l95uijust one hundred years after the great storm that swept across Cartwright(‘ecorded on page 53,0n the Shoeesof Scugog) I came from Bowmanville north to Port Perry, along the roads that our fore-tla- thers taavelled so long ago. I found it a very pleasant country of quiet holms, and gently rolling hills and va11eysi.1he road was of smooth asphOEx (asphdlt).and usually was flahkdd (flanked) by huge maples and noble elms. "any of them planted a hundred,or so, years ago. " found Port Perry a beautiful 1ocation,the main street running r:aduall to the lake front. On the lake a number of boats, some of' them sail g y -1 boats, lay at anchor, and the distant blue vistas of a lovely lake stretched away across to Scugog Island, and beyodd. Port Perry is not old fashioned,or outamoded, but rather smug and contented. The house which my father,John Joseph Hembley built in 1896A is standing white and sedate with some large hard maples in front of it.lhese are trees which he planted somewhere around 1896,0r 1898,and they are the glory of their street. The old rink where we children played is now gone. There was no Sign of the old negro ex-slave,who_used to drive hi his cow,up and down the street,to pasture,4 suppose, when l was a small boy Old ‘John Rolph has gone.Names like Bigelww, and Archer and Brock, can still h be seen on sign here and there..l Stood beside the statue of (I for- get the name of this man) standing near Lake bcugog. Here is a little poem that 4 wrote about my visit to the old 'Home Town' and lake. , e , George Henry Hambley.
