_ Elwood Jones has led a long and storied life Page 2 of 9 Although not originally settled by the family, Elwood‘s greatâ€" greatâ€" grandfather, John Jones bought it after immigrating from Ireland. John‘s fourth child, Joe, inherited it and passed it on in turn to his fourth child, Art. Elwood‘s dad, Henry Clare, born in 1894, was known as Clare. P | l 5 f ;ï¬Mood's Great Grandfather The Jones family would seem to be disinclined to move. Elwood‘s grandfather, Art, moved off the farm in 1920 and into Castleton where he became the postmaster for 25 years. Twenty years later in 1945, Elwood and his wife, Betty, joined him. In 1995 Elwood‘s grandson Derek, along with his wife, Gail, repeated the process. With their children, Sabrina and Colton, they continue to live there with Elwood. The Jones family has occupied that village house for 90 years now. Growing up on the farm Elwood says the farm was much like most farms of its time. Everybody helped â€" they raised chickens, pigs, cattle and grew crops of various kinds. The heavy work was done by horses. He thinks back to his teens in the 1930s â€" they never went hungry, but he knew many who did. He figures the entrepreneurial nature of his father saved his family.
