* The beginnings...of School Section No. 3 Louise (S.8. #3 Louise P.S.) Helen (Etula) Thompsonâ€"Makela, April 2, Apr. 9, 2016 This information is from the trustees notebook|for $.S.#3 Louise Township first meeting Dec. 27, 1919 to 1927. Â¥ of therinutes I received the notebooks from a former S.S. # 2 Lorne & Louise trustee, kept in her ‘archives‘. Main info was that teachers salary, 1919, was $800.00 a year, and blackboards put in the existing school and purchase a new stove, 2 elbows and 5 pipes. This school was a log building on lot 2, concession 4, but was destroyed entirely by fire in the early part of January in 1923. A building was rented from John Luukkonen for a schoolhouse. This place was lot 4, concession 4, on the Vermilion River. (An aside: John and Maria Luukkonen lived in this spacious log home where years later, 1938, my mother and father, Aili and Antti Etula purchased the home and property, and where I/Helen Etulaâ€"Thompsonâ€"Makela, born, 1946, came to live.) Page 22, Feb. 17, 1923..teachers salary raised to $1000.00 for the year. Page 24, Mar. 7, 1923 meeting at John Luukkonen‘s residence; teacher Mr. Doxtator resignation . Reason? Unknown. Discussion of new school in Mar. 30, 1923, and again May 7, 1923, and June 21, 1923. Location of new school house: lot 4, concession 4, known as Oscar Kauppinen‘s lot. (Shown on map) October 13, 1923: meeting/motion to buy the butcher shop from Crean Hill for the school building, tear it down and rebuild on the site. School building contract was given to the lowest tender ($415.00) of Dec. 18, 1923 at J. Luukkonen‘s residence. Also, the ice house of 17 ft. square at Crean Hill, is to be torn down for school building material. New building is to be 24 ft. by 34 ft, with a height of 12 ft. from the middle of the ceiling. A cloakroom 5 ft. wide with doors on each end, and a storm porch 6/6 ft. 8 ft. high with one window on side of wall. Page 54, Feb. 23, 1924: meeting held at the school house. New S.S. #3 Louise School is completed February 29, 1924. How far do I delve into trustees minutes and info? Primary sources are here(under glass due to fragility of paper) as well, as a binder of the minutes typed and a DVD with the work done by Kathy Makiâ€"Johnson, in threeâ€"years work, and Finnish translation by Maija Alhonmaki of the minutes.
