Page 2 . On May 26, 1902 Rev. H. L. Thomas of First Baptist Church in North Bay was called to organize the church in Kipling. â€" The . congregation walked to the shores of Deer Lake to withess the Six candidates being baptised in the cold rough water of the lake. Officers were elected and plans were begun to build a log church. The Kipling Scandinavian Church was established and a site was donated at the north end of the lake. On July 1, 1903 a sodâ€" turning ceremony was held and by the next year a log church over looked the lake. Pastor Anderson had visited neighbouring churches in Canada and the United States to canvas for funds to build a church. All his efforts brought in $600.00, quite a sum for the times. The first log church also served as the first school and Thomas Kraby was the first school teacher. After Albin Anderson left G.T. Johanson led the congregation until 1910. The first ordained minister was Rev. Gust Engstrom. He was pastor, counsellor, doctor, dentist and undertaker. Mr. & Mrs. Gust Engstrom were well liked and deserve high praise for their twentyâ€"five years of faithful service. Rev. and Mrs. Axel Fugelsang arrived in 1936 and served for five years. They were instrumental in building a new church to replace the old log church. This church building is still in use and new sunday school rooms and kitchen have been added to the back in 1996. Over the years many other pastors, summer students have served the needs of the community in the church. . Rev. J. R. Boyd served here in 1947 and set up the first childrens‘ summer camp using the old horse stables for sleeping and the parsonage house for meals. Rev. Boyd travelled from Sudbury for prayer meetings, and sunday services. He ministered for funerals for nearly every family in Kipling. His faithful service over the many years will be remembered. He travelled in all kinds of weather to bring the word of the Lord. The records show that in 1911 the church had its peak membership of fifty three. James and Lois McDougall, missionaries, minister to the congregation in the summer. The sunday school Christmas Concert has been a high light of the season for many years. Kipling is noted for its good food and plenty of it at all events. On October 13, 1996 the church celebrated its 100th Anniversay and dedication of the new edition. A special service was held to a capacity crowd with music, history display and of course lots of good food. The first school in the log church was held there«in 1912 fhe two new schools were built on the East and West side of the community and classes begun in 1913. Thomas Kraby taught in both . schools at first every second day till two teachers were hired. Mr. Kraby would walk back and forth between the two schools. They were called 1A and 1B Hugel Schools. In 1945 1A school was closed and the pupils were driven to 1B till it closed in 1954. The children were then bused to Warren Public School and now some of 3 children go the school in Sturgeon Falls to elementary and to . secondary schools there.
