HISTORY OF TOWNSEND TOWNSHIP SCHOOL AREA NO. 2. The first church at Boston was a log cabin which was destroyed by fire in the early 1800‘s, so another one was built. In 1826, this second church was used as a school also. The first school board meeting of which there is a record was held on the second Wednesday in January, 1859. Robert Howey was chairâ€" man, G. House secretary,. John Haviland was appointed trustee to replace Mr, House, and H. J. Barber was treasurer. The board employed Alexander Dgncombe as teacher for six months at $20.00 a month commencing in April 1 o 5> The teacher‘s salary and other expenses of the school were proâ€" vided by charging each resident pupil 25¢ a month, All deficiencies, afte: these rates were paid, were raised by assessment on the taxable property of the section. Also each pupil had to furnish thirtyâ€"two feet of good wood fitted for the stove when called for, or pay instead $1.25 per cord. Average attendance was thirtyâ€"three. In 1860 the Clergy Reserve money was used to purchase school maps In 1864 the mill rate was two mills on the dollar. In 1868 an acre of lanc was purchased for play area, and in 1881 the house and lot of Mary Bayley was purchased. The house was moved away and in 1892 ground was purchased from D, Rusling to enlarge the grounds. . . A new brick school was built on the present site in 1912,. Mr, W. E. Brown of Woodstock was given the contract of $2,850.00. In 1939 a water system was installed. In 1947 an extra classroom was established in the basement. In 1954 a new classroom was completed on the west of the original school. # | . o
