Te BIRR WOMEN‘S INSTITUTE DISHES At a meeting of December 10, 1924 a motion was passed aughorizing committee members, Mrs. Ernest Hodgins, Miss Avlice Scott and Mrs. Wes. Stanley to purchase one hundred each cups, saucers and plates of heavy durable china decorated with the W. I. crest. On March 11, 1925, Mrs. Hodgins reported that the dishes were ordered and would be received in three months â€" the cost to be §$50.25. On May 13, 1925, Mrs. Wes. Stanley and Mrs. Ernest Hodgins ‘ reported having viewed the dishes at a wholesale house in London. They found, much to their disappointment, that the name "Birr" was incorrectly spelled. A sample of the dishes was produced for the conâ€" sideration of the meeting and it was decided to accept them if a suitable reduction in the cost was offered. On May 28, 1925, it was finalised that the cost of the dishes was $49.50. A decision of the members made the dishes available to the two churches (Birr Anglican and Birr United) and to Birr W. I. families for any occasion. / The above reports were taken from Birr W. I. Minute books â€" now stored in the archives of the Middlesex County Library, Arva. Because there had been little use made of the dishes in recent years, the members decided at a regular meeting in 1974 to donate them to the new homes for retarded adults, Crestwood and Crestview located on No. 7 highway west of Elginfield. Prepared by Mrs. John Adans. 1976. @ mass B L S lliine o t & e _ |
