Story:
The Tec We Gwill Hall has been a part of the Newton Robinson community in Bradford West Gwillimbury since it started life as the local Orange lodge. It’s been a meeting place for Junior Farmers, Historical Societies and, of course, the Women’s Institute and the many events we’ve hosted and will continue to host in the years to come. The Women’s Institute bought the hall for $1.00 about 75 years ago and held ownership until just before the Covid-19 pandemic 2020 when it was given to the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury to manage while still allowing both Tec We Gwill Women’s Institute and the Bradford West Gwillimbury Historical Society to meet.
When we were able to use the Hall, pre-Covid, one of the monthly events we orchestrated was a community lunch with a hot meal, beverage and dessert for a small price. The hall would buzz with excitement as neighbours and friends, new and old, chatted and ate.
The kitchen is the heart of any home and it’s no different in the Tec We Gwill WI Hall. We prepare the full meal in our certified kitchen from hot meat entrée, starch, vegetables, salads, condiments and dessert all while having fun setting up, serving and tearing down. It’s not work when it’s fun!
This picture was taken at the last Community luncheon prior to the Hall closure because of Covid-19.
It was the Valentine’s Day event. We donned our snazzy, sparkly glasses and served up meat, potatoes, vegetables, fresh buns and salad. Lots of laughter, friendship and festivity surrounded us.
It was an extra special lunch because we decided to take the ideas we garnered from the chocolate making workshop the week before and create the desserts – chocolate cake with a dab of ice cream and a chocolate lace heart; chocolate mousse with a dab of whipped cream and the requisite chocolate lace heart. We got so many compliments because of the desserts that day. They were special! The sprinkles of candy hearts and paper heart cut outs decorating the tables made it an extra festive occasion.
Of course, it has become extra special because that’s the last community lunch we’ve served in 2 years. Extra special because it was an event that showed how much we, as the Tec We Gwill WI, love to give back to our family, friends and the community.
