White Lake Women’s Institute Hall

In 1915, a group of women from White Lake joined the fast growing movement known as the Women’s Institute (WI) of Ontario. With help from the Burnstown Branch, the White Lake WI Branch was formed.
In the early years, the White Lake Branch supported soldiers from both World Wars by sewing shirts, knitting socks, and quilting blankets, as well as working hard to better their community by sponsoring Girls’ Garden Club, teaching canning and home-making and initiating the cleanup of the cemetery.
All of the efforts did not go unnoticed by the community, and as a result, Mr. John S. Box donated a building to the White Lake WI Branch in 1963. The building, a former Presbyterian Church located in the village of White Lake , needed many repairs and upgrades, such as a new roof and siding, finishing the interior walls, and adding a kitchen and bathroom. Over the years, the dedicated WI members completed these tasks.
Today similar fundraising continues by the White Lake WI, hosting community meals, receptions, live theater, euchre games and sales from the Bargain Basement. The funds raised are used to pay for building maintenance and utilities, and to make donations to the community.
The White Lake Women’s Institute Hall has been an amazing vehicle to raise substantial dollars that have gone right back into the community. Without all their efforts to keep this building alive, there would be no indoor meeting place for the folks of White Lake and surrounding countryside. Mr. John S. Box was certainly a visionary for believing in the White Lake Women’s Institute.
