Description
Today, February 26, 2022 (on the 112th anniversary of her passing) the Tipsy Teapots visited the Adelaide Hoodless Homestead on Blue Lake Road in Brant County to take a photo with the plaque erected in her honour.
Adelaide lived in this home with her farming family until 1881. As a group of farm women we wanted to acknowledge and honour her notable accomplishments.
We also took time to reflect on these accomplishments: becoming the second president of the Hamilton branch Y.W.C.A.; domestic science education where she wrote a textbook for Domestic Science courses; establishing a Canadian branch of the Victorian Order of Nurses; approaching Sir William MacDonald, to finance the Domestic Science Course in Guelph and in Quebec, as well as her innovations in hygiene, cleanliness, and frugality (domestic science), and how all of this still rings true in these Covid and green movement times (reduce, re-use, recycle).
We had a great time learning more about this amazing woman and how she started the WI movement on February 19, 1897, by organizing a meeting of rural women who could meet to discuss their problems and work together to improve their standard of homemaking and citizenship.
Our group, the Tipsy Teapots, is also a group of women who often get together to discuss what is going on in our lives, the community, and the world around us and to just enjoy the company and camaraderie of like-minded women. Thank you, Adelaide!
