- Our story is about a monument placed at the crossroads of the village of Carlingford, located in the centre of a triangle that joins Stratford, Mitchell, and St. Mary’s in Southwestern Ontario. We are members of the Motherwell branch of FWIO but have connections with Carlingford. Our WISH team leader grew up in Carlingford and has many wonderful memories of life in the small community. Our branch Vice President and her husband live there now. In 2004 the Carlingford WI branch helped in the creation of a history book about the community. Then, in 2014, they erected the stone monument as a tribute to the original settlers in the area. Community members maintain the grounds around the stone. At one time there were two churches, two general stores, a post office, a garage, and a two roomed school in the village. Today Carlingford consists of twenty some homes, both new and old. But the villagers need only to look at the monument at the corner to be reminded of what came before them. Pictured in our photo are WISH team members Elaine Smith, Elaine Standeaven, and Mary Ross. Our fourth member, Donna McIntosh wasn’t available for this photo.
