York Road WI York Road WI (Northumberland East District, Trent Valley Area) held a ROSE Session on May 11, 2016 at Smithfield United Church. The topic was "The 7 Wonders of the Trent Valley" with Ewa Bednarczuk giving an excellent talk on the 7 different places that are a must see in the area. Friends and family were invited and advertising was done through posters, emails and word of mouth. Eleven people attended this free event. Carry-On WI Carry-On WI (Huron Perth District, Guelph Area) from Palmerston, Ontario recently hosted a four- week learn to rag quilt course for a group of 9-12-year-old girls. Carry-On WI President, Lynda Alexander, first came to the Branch with the idea of holding a class after there were so few entries in the youth competition at the International Plowing Match (IPM), where she is on the quilting committee. WI Member, Tracy Zemmelink's daughter brought some invitations to her school and word spread quickly! Parents began contacting the Branch via Facebook, which made communication very easy. The girls walked together from school to Lynda's home each Wednesday for 4 classes throughout the month of June. Other Members dropped off snacks so the girls were fueled up and ready to sew! Machines were borrowed and they were able to set up the 6 required in Lynda's basement, where she and Tracy taught the course. Participants were: Emeline Zemmelink (age 10), Sarah Zemmelink (age 10), Ella Habermahl (age 11), Carmen Ward (age 11), Cassie Ward (age 9) and Megan Leach (age 10). They made full flannel rag quilts, 5 squares by 6 squares. The students had to provide their own material and the Branch donated the natural fill. The class was run free of cost to these exceptional girls who all planned to enter their prize quilts into the IPM youth competition in Harriston this year. Carry-On WI will be looking at doing something like this again in the future. The girls were so happy to learn, even saying they did not want to leave at the end of each class. The Branch hopes that WI can help with the lack of teaching of sewing skills in today's Ontario school curriculum.
