WI Lego
Our team – “The Hot Wheels” are from the Women Inspiring Women branch of the WI in Brant County. We had a blast reverting to our children’s days of playing with Lego – such a timeless and versatile toy. Between the four of us we had plenty of regular pieces and lots of extras that assisted in our creation. We call our creation “Living in Technicolour.” The values of the Women’s Institute are also timeless and versatile – having survived in some form for 125 years!
The focus of our creation is the home as we feel creating a safe and positive environment in our homes is one of the key goals of WI.
We’re proud to tell you some of the highlights of our creation!
The tractor and chicken demonstrate our connection to agriculture and farm living, which is the root of our WI movement. While fewer of our members are connected to the land, there is a real curiosity about our food and a keen interest to learn more. Brant County has very diverse agriculture production with everything from apples to ginseng to animal agriculture and every type of field and vegetable crop. We actively support the Bite of Brant program. This program invites grade 5 students from throughout Brantford and Brant County to spend a day learning a little bit about agriculture at various education stations set up at the Burford Fairgrounds. Our key role is to feed the dozens of volunteers who set up the stations over the 2 day program.
The huge tree in the foreground and all the eco friendly machines demonstrate our support for green initiatives in our meetings and in our community. One of the key concerns for the upcoming provincial elections is to lobby for green bag garbage collection as the population our county continues to grow at a breakneck pace. We are active partners in an upcoming all candidate’s meeting in early May to allow citizens to interact with those running for the office of MPP. This has been a proud tradition of our WI Branch for the last several elections.
There are lots of little Lego blocks that feature food. We have a focus on learning about good nutrition from each other and from speakers on the topic. Of course, socially we connect over food and it’s a timeless way of supporting
each other in times of happiness and sorrow. We also regularly support local food banks in our monthly giving program.
There is a little red telephone on one of the blocks. This represents our need to connect and through our branch we work very hard on this. A program that has just wrapped up is our Secret Sister program. About half of our membership participated in this year long activity of showing care to each other at special occasions and just because. It was especially meaningful during the lock downs and uncertain times of Covid. Cards and small gifts left in secret were a lift for everyone. The telephone is also significant in that the first telephone call was made between Paris and Brantford in downtown Paris and we’re very proud of that part of our local history.
COVID is still very present, so luckily one member has a huge porch and we worked on the creation outside.
In the picture are left to right Marilyn Sewell, Jennifer Budd, Susan Stulen and Tannis Hamill. We have our hands extended into the creation to demonstrate our individual and collective connection.
