AN ACT OF KINDNESS FINDS FRIENDSHIP AND MEMBERSHIP
Violetta’s Café is a small café of 6 tables attached to the Bent River General Store. Our scavenger group of Detective Divas joined up for a light luncheon on a cool September weekday afternoon. We each indulged in generous bowls of homemade ham and split pea soup with toasted rolls. We chatted away while we ate. The café had a steady flow of customers come in and one of the ladies at our table recognized and greeted a young man who entered. We had been speaking to the waitress about Women’s Institute and discovered she had once been a member of WI in another town! It turns out she would consider joining WI again. We presented her with the WI bookmark which listed details about the organization and asked the young man if he would take a picture of us with the waitress. We were laughing and posing when another young couple came in with their baby. Ahh, another female. We approached her and explained that we were offering a bookmark and a little information about WI as part of a scavenger hunt and asked her if she would accept a bookmark and be willing to have her picture taken. She said yes hesitantly and her husband suggested we should have the baby in the picture also. Again the young man who took the first picture was put on duty and he took another picture. By this time most of the people in the café were watching us and two men at a table in the corner asked us what is WI. We explained that we belong to a worldwide service group, a group of women who have speakers teach about various subjects of interest and we raise funds to give back to the community. We mentioned our infamous bake sales. The proud young mother showed us pictures of her baby in cute poses. Her partner suggested she should come to a WI meeting to give her something to keep her busy when he was at work. And of course we suggested she could invite other young mothers to accompany her. Surprisingly, through talking with her, we found out that one of the Detective Divas had attended school with the young lady’s mother and father. We told her we may look old but we are young at heart. We may or may not see either of the ladies at a WI meeting but we certainly made a few more people aware of Women’s Institute and had a very enjoyable time.
