- Well, The Price is Right...
On Sunday, October 9th, 2022, the Tippy Toe Tigers Team of Jean Brumpton Women's Institute in Tillsonburg, Ontario got together to find our favourite pumpkin, carve it and have our photo taken. We were helped by one of our team member's son, Zackery, who is proudly holding our carved pumpkin with the dollar sign in our photo. Our team is dressed in “The Price is Right” costumes made by our team member, who is also Zackery's Mom, because they are quick to put on and symbolize the excellent low price paid for our pumpkin.
If you are not familiar with The Price is Right, just google “The Price is Right” and click on “Any Number”. Our team may not be as slim as the girl winning there, but hey we were wearing one colour t-shirts!
Pumpkins (after turnips) over the past many years have been used to symbolize Hallowe'en when they are hollowed out, carved and a light put inside. They came to be known as a Jack-o'-Lanterns because early lamplighters were called Jack of the Lantern.
The origin of Halloween is the Irish Celts Autumn Festival held on the first day of the 11th month – the month known as November in English but as Samhain in Irish. The root of the word – sam – means summer while fuin means end. Samhain then was the Celtic New Year and celebrations began at sunset of the day before – its “Eve”. People would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. In the 8th century Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honour all saints. Soon some of the traditions of Samhain were included. The eve before was known as All Hallows Eve and later “Halloween”. Over time Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trick or treating, carving Jack-o-'Lanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes and eating treats.
