OH MY GOURD! On Wednesday, October 5th, the Howick Hot to Trot-hers waited patiently to see what challenge WISH was going to give us this month. They did not disappoint. After reading the challenge, we thought this would be great fun and help exercise our creative talents. Heather was even growing pumpkins in her garden. After our first get-together, over refreshments and snacks, at Gwen’s home who is recovering from knee surgery, we decided on our theme. Because one team member loves the winter season, we did not want to miss our opportunity to celebrate winter early with a “Snowman Pumpkin”. How hard can it be??
The date was set. The pumpkins were gathered. And we started our creativity. These were the hardest pumpkins we have ever seen!! After many laughs, bent craving knives, jammed drill bits and other high power tools from Gwen’s woodworking shop, we had our pumpkin complete. We four witches (Darlene Harding, Marilyn King, Gwen Catherwood & Heather Stinson) put on our mitts and scarves to display our Halloween Snowman pumpkin. Our inspiring poet, Marilyn went home and put our fun day to verse.
Challenge Number Five, the toughest for sure

Who knew the challenge number five would bring.
Carving a pumpkin should be such a simple thing.
All four of us gathered out on the farm
Where we knew that messiness would do no harm.

The pumpkins we had were white and fresh from the garden rough.
Is it the season or the genetics that made the shell so tough?
Thankfully we were in the shop of a Queen.
There were more saws and drills than most have ever seen.

A pumpkin snowman was to be designed so
Three pumpkins were cleaned and set to the side.
But not before a knife was broken and tools bent
That’s when the drill bits came out in abundance.

Four women agreeing on design is no small feat.
A scary face, a snowflake above the feet,
And in the middle some buttons for the suit.
A black top hat would make him complete.

So, on to the carving
Oh, the skin was so very tough
Thank goodness for drills of every size
And carving tools to polish off the prize.

One drill became clogged with the flesh
Keeping one girl busy cleaning it out
While two others worked hard to carve the features
They were such busy creatures.

Every project needs a cheerleader
We had one of those who
Sat at the side, picking drill sizes
And generally keeping the encouragement flowing.

Now that the carving is done,
Will we light it up just for fun?
Out came the Christmas lights
Bunches and bunches.

He was picture perfect
So now for the camera
Set him on a stool
Make the room dark.

We all dawned our witch wear,
Set the camera timer,
Gathered around him with our best smiles
And created a memory to share across the miles.
