The Copley Family 1850-1947 About the year 1850 there came to Canada from Elston Nottinghamshire, England John Copley his wife Elizabeth and their two children John and Mary, a small grandchild Eliza Jones. After a stormy voyage of six weeks they landed on Canadian soil, coming to Paris and lived there about two years, the railroad was being built through Paris at that time, John Copley senior was with the construction gang and had the misfortune of having the bank cave in partly covering him, breaking his leg. This left him maimed and a great handicap the rest of his life. Coming to New Dundee which was the one small hamlet at that time. They took up farming on the farm now owned by George Einwechter staying here for a number of years, then moving to a farm south of the village on the town line some years later they retired and moved to the small place east of the village now owned by Harry Copley. Here John Copley Senior died in 1895 at the age of 95, his wife Elizabeth about 1903 1803 The daughter Mary was married to Gottlieb Bethehen in 1867 and they lived on the Bettschen farm north of the village of New Dundee, leaving the farm in 1907 moving to the village, where she died in 1908 The grandchild Eliza Jones in later years married Henry Einwechter. She died in 1924.
