HOODLESS CAIRN PARTY LINE By KATHRYN HANSULD When a group of Women's Institute members want to get a thing done — or in this case, prevent it — they generally accomplish their end. Deep concern was felt by North and South Brant Women's Institutes at the proposed removal of a cairn near St. George erected to honor Mrs. Adelaide Hoodless, founder of the Women's Institute which has since become a worldwide organization. The cairn was erected in 1937 at the junction of highways No. 5 and 24, in commemoration of the birthplace near St. George of Mrs. Hoodless. • ¦ Removal of the cairn was proposed to facilitate the widening of highway No. 5. The St. George branch, which naturally takes a more than historical interest in the memorial, joined Blue Lake and Auburn branches in drawing up resolutions decrying the proposed removal and requesting assurance that the cairn would stay. These were forwarded to the North Brant District W.I. executive — and thence to Highways Minister Doucett. An accompanying letter from the district executive explained that Mrs. Hoodless, as the founder of a worldwide organization (the Associated Countrywomen of the World) was an international personality and that her memorial, therefore, had international significance.
