Burks Falls, Ontario. June 23rd, 1950. Department of Agriculture, Women's Institute Branch, Home Economics Service Miss Anna P. Lewis. Dear Madam:- The following information is forwarded in connection with our Branch History. The Chalmers Women's Institute was organized on may 8th, 1941. by Mrs Hill of Sundridge, with 13 members, and with the following Officers:- President- Mrs. Margaret Mitchell. Vice-President- Mrs Win. Webber. Sec-Treas. Mrs Bert Pink. District-Director- Mrs Lloyd Phillips. Branch Directors- Mrs. D. Etty, Mrs H. Davidson, Mrs H. Hewitt. The Branch was named after Mrs Pink's father Mr. Chalmers at whose home it was organized, Our first accomplishment was along the line of community activities, when we made a bee and cleaned up the cemetery, which has since been taken over by the town and a Cemetery Board organized. This has been a great improvement to the community. A great deal of work was done during the war, making quilts and sending boxes overseas to the soldiers. Since the war we have done Red Cross sewing and donated to our new Red Cross Hospital, Sick 'Children's Hospital and local Rink and Agricultural Society." Each year we give prizes for boys and girls work at the fair. Daughters of members are given showers before weddings and sons are given gifts; Bereaved members are remembered with flowers, also the sick and shut-ins. Several sewing classes, Short Courses, and Garden Clubs have been sponsored. Quilts have been quilted for members and neighbors. June, 1950.
