HISTORY OF S.S. No. 2, LEFROY In 1880, The Ansonia public school was erected on one-half acre of land donated by Alex Rutledge. Erected was a plain but useful log building. And, until 1960 class after class of new pupils were to appear before new teachers, as they gained their education to become good citizens of Canada. The old order changeth, and the twenty-three pupils then attending school were transported by bus to a modern school at Little Rapids. The first teacher was Addison King, who used crutches. Gilbert Acheson who attended the first school, later became Secretary-Treasurer of the school board. Instrumental in building the school were trustees William Flemming, Alex Brandon and John C. Owens. Mr. Owens, a bachelor, served as trustee for nineteen years. During these years the salaries of teachers varied from $250.00 to S3,000.00 yearly. In 1904 the present asphalt-brick covered building was erected. In 1911 a cement foundation was built. In 1935 a larger area was enclosed with a fence. In 1937 septic tanks and indoor toilets were installed. The old log school, used as a woodshed, was replaced by a frame building in 1944. As modern methods were used, a well was dug in 1949, and in 1952 electric lights were installeed. Records compiled by teachers show the attendance varied from ten to twenty-nine. Mrs. Gilbert Acheson, a resident of the school section was teaching from January 1942 to June 1953. In 1957 the trustees were Elwood Seabrook, Percy King, Gerald Whitfield, Wilfred Dumond and Robert McCreight. Clifford Hagan was the secretary. Among the earlier teachers were: Mr. Forester, Mr. Johnson, Mr. Bescker, Mr. Dowling, Miss Henry, Miss Kerslick, Mary Campbell, Albert Thomson, Ella Ferguson, Laura Duff, Lily Mitchell, and Madge Owens. Later records list Lily Mitchell in 1910, Mary McCrea in 1912, Sarah Hern in 1914, Kate McDonald in 1917, Ella Pugh in 1918, Ethel Wilman in 1920, Hattie Carter in 1921, Mabel Rowan in 1922, A.R. Jarvis and Violet Chevis in 1924, Nora Pace in 1925, Harriett McKay in 1926, James McDonald in 1929, Norma Coulter in 1932, Ivan Notter in 1933, Ruth McKay in 1934,Edward Howey in 1937,Lois Craig in 1938, Agnes Boville in 1940, Mrs. J.R. Tait and Mary Wilson in 1941, Mrs. Margaret Acheson in 1942, Kathryn Hagan in 1955, Leila Williams in 1956, Mrs. Edith Proud in 1957, and Keith Gibbs in 1959. In 1960 Mrs. Thomas taught for two months until the new school opened in Little Rapids.
