For Reference only, Jan 24 1998 Foreword When Lord Tweedsmuir was Governor-general of Canada from 1935 to 1940, his wife Lady Tweedsmuir came with him. She had been an enthusiastic Women's Institute member in England and became interested in the Federated Women's Institute of Canada. Since this was such a new Country, she saw a need to preserve it's local history. She suggested that each Institute branch collect stories of pioneer life, settlement of families and farms and the development of the area, and preserve them in history books. The Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario acted on her suggestion and the Tweedsmuir Histories came into being. They were to be collections of stories written or told to a writer, and of pictures donated by members. There was no intention in the beginning of publishing them. The information was to be kept available for anyone interested to read or use for research. Several branches have since published material from their histories. The nearby Dunchurch branch has published three volumes entitled "Down Memory Lane with Hagerman People". The Magnetawan branch didn't start it's history until 1978, so many of the early bits of information have been lost. There have been many requests to make public what we do have, so the members have decided to do just that. There has been no attempt to write a history. We leave that up to someone more qualified. There will be some overlapping and we hope not too much repetition as each person tells his or her story. The Tweedsmuir History will not be closed. We will continue to be looking for and accepting stories and pictures for it. We hope you will enjoy what we are presenting here. The members of the Magnetawan Women's Institute. Donated to the Magnetawan Public Library November 14, 1997 by the Magnetawan Women's Institute FOR REFERENCE ONLY
